the Weird Art of Boris Dolgov, Humistone, Bok, and M.N. Beale

Boris Dolgov was a contemporary of Lee Brown Coye, Virgil Finlay, and Hannes Bok; all artists for Weird Tales. Like Bok, it seems like Dolgov was not at all shy about drawing sexy girls. I particularly enjoy the heading for the Bradbury short story by M.N. Beale and hope to do an entire post on Mr. Beale in the future.

As always, click the images for large scans. Enjoy!

  2. Thanks Brian! The last two post have been completely from just three different issues of Weird Tales (and there's still a bunch more cool weird stuff to post from them! But other than that I try to hit as many flea markets, thrift shops, and garage sales as possible - and I'm always searching for weird-related fanzines! Stuart David Schiff's amazing 70's and 80's fanzine WHISPERS is one thing that got me totally hooked. Check it out, you can get issues for like 7 bucks on ebay.

  3. Brian,

You can find tons of some of the best weird art every published -- including this stuff by Boris Dolgov -- every published in the pages and on the covers of WEIRD TALES pulp magazine (which was published from 1926 through 1954 and then revived recently in a different form). You can find back issues of WEIRD TALES on eBay... they go from $10 bucks each to $hundreds of bucks depending on the rarity and condition of the issue:

  4. make that "ever published" ...and by the way, Mike, this is a GREAT JOB of scanning in some of Dolgov's best pieces. He is one of the most under appreciated of the Weird Tales artists. His color cover art didn't work quite as well as his black and white stuff, but he still did several very nice color covers for WEIRD TALES in the 1940s. And, oh yeah, here's a better link to where they have buried the auctions for WEIRD TALES on eBay (unfortunately, you just can't find them in used books stores and thrift shops anymore):

  5. JR Thanks! And I love Boris Dolgov. I'd love to get a book out on him (as well as Coye and Matt Fox of course).
